Port Talbot, town, Port Talbot District, West Glamorgan, southern Wales, on Swansea Bay of the Bristol Channel. It is the site of one of the largest steel-producing complexes in Europe. Other products include iron and tinplate; coal is mined in the vicinity. Its port was improved in 1970 to allow the docking of large ore-carrying vessels. The town is also a seaside resort and local trade center. Dock facilities were opened here in 1837, and the town developed as a coal-shipping center.
