Prestwick, city, South Ayrshire, Scotland, on the Firth of Clyde, near Glasgow. The first British Open Golf Championship was held here in 1860. Prestwick, founded in the 10th century, is one of the most ancient cities in Scotland. Agriculture, supplemented by cotton weaving and shoemaking, was the most important occupation until Prestwick's golf course was laid out in the 19th century. Thereafter the town depended primarily on tourists and golfing visitors for its revenue.
Prestwick is served by a busy international airport, noted especially for handling transatlantic air traffic. The city has a mild climate and a relatively fog-free atmosphere, which contributed to the development of the airport. Population 13,705 (1991).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Prestwick Information info
