Paisley, burgh, administrative center of Renfrewshire unitary authority, central Scotland, on the White Cart Water, near Glasgow. Manufactures include thread, textiles, chemicals, and processed foods. Paisley is the site of a 15th-century abbey and the Paisley College of Technology (1897). The town grew around a Cluniac monastery founded in 1163. The celebrated Paisley shawls, similar to Kashmiri shawls, were made here from 1805 until about the 1870s.
