Hamilton, burgh and administrative center of South Lanarkshire unitary authority, central Scotland, on the Clyde River near its confluence with the Avon River, near Glasgow. Hamilton is an industrial center, with manufactures that include electrical equipment, metal products, carpets, bricks, and foodstuffs. A settlement existed on the site in prehistoric times. Originally called Cadzow, the town took its name from the local seigniorial Hamilton family in 1445. Its development as an industrial center in the 19th century was aided by the availability of coal in the region. Until 1975 Hamilton was the county town of the former county of Lanarkshire.
