Falkirk, unitary authority, burgh, and old market town in central Scotland, situated 18 km (11 mi) southeast of Stirling and 35 km (22 mi) northeast of Glasgow in an industrial and fertile farm region. Falkirk's port, Grangemouth, is on the Forth and Clyde Canal, 5 km (3 mi) away from town.
The nearby Wall of Antoninus, erected in AD 142 as a Roman defense, suggests former Roman occupation. Falkirk was also the site of the Battle of Falkirk in 1298, which marked the defeat of Scottish hero William Wallace by King Edward I of England. Falkirk was made a burgh of barony in 1600 and a burgh of regality in 1646. In 1715 its ownership was forfeited to the monarchy. Population 35,968 (1991).
