Airdrie, parliamentary burgh, or borough, in south central Scotland, in the region of Strathclyde, 18 km (11 mi) east of Glasgow. It lies in New Monkland parish, which in 1640 was formed out of Monkland region, which in turn consisted of land that King Malcolm IV granted to the Newbattle monks. Originally a weaving town, Airdrie later prospered with the discovery of coal and ironstone in the area, but mining is no longer important in the area. Population 36,998 (1991).
