Saint Helens, borough, in the metropolitan county of Merseyside, western England, near Liverpool. Saint Helens is known for its important glass-manufacturing industry, which was founded here in 1773. Other manufactures include iron and bricks. Coal mines are located in the vicinity. The borough was enlarged in 1974 and contains agricultural areas to the north.
