Poole, borough and unitary authority, southern England, on the English Channel. Poole has a large, nearly landlocked harbor and is a naval supply station and a yachting center. Its port handles mainly imports of petroleum products. Pottery is manufactured, and the borough has an oyster fishery. Poole was first mentioned in the records of the 14th century; it received county status in 1586. Population 139,226 (1996 estimate).
