Newcastle-under-Lyme, borough, Staffordshire, central England, adjacent to Stoke-on-Trent. Local manufactures include bricks, tile, pottery, machinery, textiles, and food products; coal mining is also important. Located in the borough are the 13th-century Church of Saint Giles (rebuilt in 1876) and the University of Keele (1949). The borough's name is taken from a castle, which was built here in the 12th century, and for its proximity to the former Lyme Forest. The borough was enlarged in 1932 and again in 1974. Population (1996 estimate) 122,314.
