Margate, town, in Thanet District, Kent, southeastern England, at the southeastern end of the Thames estuary, on the northern coast of the Isle of Thanet. Margate is a popular North Sea resort with a small harbor and fine sandy beaches; the town also has some light industry. Points of interest include the Church of Saint John the Baptist, portions of which date from the 11th century. Margate first developed as a seaside resort in the mid-18th century.
