East One 175 St.John Street - 020 7566 0088 £15.01 - £30.00 A modern conversion of an old building - food is selected from a buffet and taken to the chef to be stir fried with the sauces/extras of your choice. Popular with Clerkenwell's "Meejah" crowd. Cuisine: Chinese Review:Not Quite I have always been a bit sniffy about restaurants that serve raw food, but I must admit it was a real treat to pick my fancy of chopped and prepared vegetables and a variety of fish and meat, prior to watching the chef stir fry it. We went in a group, all ordered the 'eat what you like' buffet and all had two stir fry meals with rice. We all enjoyed it - the freshness, combined with the total freedom of choice made for a good evening; the informal atmosphere added to the experience. Sadly, the non-smokers are coralled by the queue - which is a pity.
The Founder's Arms 52 Hopton Street - 020 7928 1899 A British pub serving real ale and bar meals in an airy, contemporary atmosphere overlooking the River Thames. Only a stone's throw from the Tate Modern art gallery. Cuisine: Bar / Pub / Brewery Review:Not bad overall
Friends Hollywood Road SW10 - 020 7376 3890 £15.01 - £30.00 Cuisine: Italian Recommended Dishes:Pizza Paesana Review:Great Pizza in London One of the best pizzas in London. Great pasta and antipasti too.
L'Escargot 48 Greek Street - 020 7437 2679 £30.01 - £45.00 L'Escargot rambles over several floors, many rooms in an old - but beautifully maintained building. Cuisine: Eclectic Review:A Taste of Tradition
Ruby in the Dust 102 Camden High Street - 020 7485 2744 £15.01 - £30.00 A mix of dishes with daily specials in a 'pseudo rustic' setting. Cuisine: Eclectic Recommended Dishes:Vegetarian selections Review:A Taste of the Seventies? Ruby's in Camden is well established - at least 15 years - and has managed to step out of normal time. It has a vaguely hippy feel to it, which seems to affect all the staff. Urgency? forget it. Hurry? best not. All the time in the world? you're welcome! I would only add that the staff are polite, considerate and you somehow get to realise that it really is your problem! The menu shows great imagination, especially the vegetarian dishes (clearly indicated on the menu). For the omnivores, the food is wholesome with a 'homecooked' touch. If you've read this far - you should be at Ruby
Taste of Siam 45 Camden High Street - 020 7380 0665 £15.01 - £30.00 A small restaurant in the centreof Camden town, with frame pictures of Thailand in its "Siam" days. Friendly, with efficient and unfussy service, no time pressure. Cuisine: Thai Recommended Dishes:sweet and sour Review:Modest but marvellous This restaurant is very modestly priced by local standards, but provides a varied and tasty menu of Thai dishes. It is a family run restauarn, with no pretentions about style and design; all the effort goes into the food!
Uppers Bistro Upper Street, Islington - 020 7226 5650 £30.01 - £45.00 A conversion of three small shops - so several rooms, with small tables of 2 - 4 people. Decor includes posters of big local events over the last few years. Some tables are non-smoking, but difficult to see a clear policy. Food is "Uppers" version of various, mostly european dishes, with a French accent. Standard menu, with daily specials.
\nCost - middle range (by UK standards), reasonable price extensive choice bar. Cuisine: French Review:Uppers Bistro, Islington Uppers is consistent, and offers a broad menu at middle price with good service; despite the area being awash with restaurants, consistent quality is a rarity. There's variety from boring old chile; nicely presented, to venison, steak and a medly of European dishes. Service is usually pretty good, although not perfect! The atmosphere is cosy and discrete, an ideal place for that first date, when you are not sure what menu to pick - but beware the vegetarian selection, which can be limited.
Vic Naylor 38 Saint John Street - 020 7608 2181 £30.01 - £45.00 A variety of dishes, from vegetarian to steak, in an old building which has brick and old tiles exposed an open fireplace contributes to a warm atmosphere, and the bar has a broad range of beers wines, spirits and cocktails.\n\nOpen for lunch and dinner. Cuisine: Eclectic Recommended Dishes:Steak Review:Beery, Brassy and Buzzing Vic Naylors is a popular bar and eatery on the Farringdon edge of the city; it is crowded and the bar has music which gets steadily louder as the evening wears on. Service is not the fastest in town, but friendly and helpful - and they always know who ordered what. Reservations help, but do not worry if your table is late - that's normal on a busy evening. Well used by local city workers, there is a loyal clientele from distant areas too. Thoroughly recommended.

Review:Excellent Modern Restaurant
Le Bistro Savoir Faire New Oxford Street - 020 7436 0707 £15.01 - £30.00 Cuisine: French Recommended Dishes: Menu seems to change frequently Review:Bohemia in Central London This tiny little place near Centre Point has great atmosphere; all walls and the ceiling have been painted with historic figures and quotations - plus a few bits of wisdom. Not dark and claustrophobic, though.Service is a bit arbitrary, but very friendly and helpful. The food? a limited menu, which changes as the mood takes (photocopy offered; only the wine list is permanent). The meal is nicely cooked and presented, and does have a genuine french taste (It's all in the herbs, apparently). Review:Eccentric, but all the better for it
Bibendum Michelin House, 81 Fulham Road - 020 7581 5817 £30.01 - £45.00 Located in the old Michelin Building along with a number of trendy shops. A gracefully designed space with elements harkening back to its mascot, the Michelin man (Monsieur Bibendum).
\nThe French menu has traditional and contemporary touches; the service is courteous and competent. Cuisine: French Review:A Place to be Seen Bibendum was created at no small expense to attract London's Glitterati; it succeeded, but the crowd, ever restless, has largely moved on, leaving this fine building to expensive, expenses lunches.Having said that, if you can afford this kind of place, you will get excellent food, served to you by staff who are "too good to be waiting" - in their view, at least.
Pizza Express 4 Borough High Street - 020 7407 2995 £15.01 - £30.00 Menu is pizza-dominated, with small dessert menu and wine list. The restaurant is set in a mature building, transformed inside with steel, glass and marble. Split level gives those upstairs a view over those downstairs. Cuisine: Pizza Review:Pizza the Action? It is rare that a chain restaurant inspires me to even consider a review, but this one has managed to avoid the homogenous influence of the chain, and the humble pizza was bursting with flavour. The ambiance, alas, was the usual modern, boring layout of polished wood, glass and steel, so the noise level at lunch was appalling - perhaps they try to emulate the school canteen feel, to reassure the busy city clientele. More likely they've noticed that dispensing with carpets saves considerable cash, both on carpets and cleaning them. Shame, but it was clean to the point of clinical.
Angus Steak House The Strand - 020 7240 5096 £15.01 - £30.00 Cuisine: Steaks Recommended Dishes:Aberdeen Steak Stay away is my advice or visit KFC! Review:Angus Steak Bar
Review:Very poor performance I was served Chateaubriand with green beans that had not been drained so the water from the beans contaminated the beef - also the sauteed potatoes were seriously overcooked. When I asked to speak with the Duty Manager I was told none was available. When I commented that the potatoes were overcooked I was insulted with the remark "This is not KFC, you know!" No - nor is it Le Manoir, either. I have written to the MD but have had no acknowledgement so my next step will be to pursue the credit card company.
Indian Ocean 359 Holloway Road - 020 7609 9963 £30.01 - £45.00 A modern very white restaurant, with spotlights set into the ceiling. A choice of semi-private booths and open seating, with a comfortable waiting area for take away customers. Cuisine: Indian / Pakistani Recommended Dishes:Chicken Review:No advertisement for Indian Cuisine This over-bright restaurant is blessed with a bizarre mixture of Indian and western musak, mercifully at fairly low volume, punctuated by customers mobile telephones.Service was slow, despite a plethora of staff, and the food was no better than average, and not even attractively presented
Angus Steak House Coventry Street - 020 7 Opposite the Swiss Centre. Cuisine: Steaks Recommended Dishes:None. Review:This place is disgusting!
