Lichfield, city, Staffordshire, central England. The city, formed in 1974, includes the market town of Lichfield (incorporated 1548) and the surrounding largely agricultural area; some light industry is also located here. Lichfield is famous for its three-spired sandstone cathedral (13th century) and the Lichfield Grammar School (1495), at which the essayist Joseph Addison, the writer and lexicographer Samuel Johnson, and the actor David Garrick studied.
