Huddersfield, town in Kirklees Borough, in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire, northern England, on the Colne River. An industrial town and transportation center, Huddersfield is known for the production of worsteds and woolens. Other manufactures include machinery and metal products. The town is also known for the concert series presented in the 19th-century Town Hall. The Huddersfield Choral Society, founded in 1836, is made up of 230 amateur singers and is well known in Britain and worldwide. The University of Huddersfield (1992, formerly a polytechnic college) is here. Huddersfield attained importance in the 17th century with the introduction of the wool trade. Population (1991) 143,726.
