Gillingham, borough, unitary authority of Medway, southeastern England, on the Medway River. An industrial and residential community, Gillingham also has dockyards. Among its many manufactures are chemicals and electrical equipment. It was incorporated as a borough in 1903. In 1998 Gillingham joined the neighboring city of Rochester to form the unitary authority of Medway.
