Gateshead, borough, in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, northeastern England, on the Tyne River, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne. Gateshead is an industrial center located in a large coal-mining region; coal and iron ore are the chief commodities handled by its port. Manufactures include iron and steel goods and processed foods. Probably settled in Saxon times, Gateshead received its first charter in 1164. The industrial development and growth of the community date from the 19th century.
