Birkenhead, large town, Wirral Borough, in the metropolitan county of Merseyside, northwestern England. Located on the Wirral Peninsula (across the Mersey River from Liverpool), Birkenhead is an important seaport and industrial center. Located here are facilities for the storage and refining of petroleum, a major import. Other imports processed are iron ore and grains. The town also has a large livestock market. Birkenhead was a small community until the completion of new docks here in 1847 led to its rapid growth as a commercial and shipbuilding center.
