Barrow-in-Furness, borough, Cumbria, northwestern England. The borough, which was formed in 1974, comprises Walney Island and the southern portion of Furness Peninsula; it includes the former urban district of Dalton-in-Furness and the former county borough of Barrow-in-Furness, a port on an inlet of the Irish Sea. Among the manufactures are machinery, wood and paper products, and steel. In the 1840s Barrow-in-Furness became an important steel-producing center, utilizing local hematite deposits. In the mid-20th century shipbuilding was the chief industry. By the 1970s ore deposits were exhausted and port traffic had declined. Population (1991) 48,947.
