Balaklava, former village, now part of the city of Sevastopol', Ukraine, located on the tip of the Crimean Peninsula, opposite Yalta. Balaklava has a fine natural harbor affording secure anchorage for large ships. From 1854 to 1856 it was British headquarters during the Crimean War; the chief engagement here occurred on October 25, 1854.
