Neuchâtel, town, western Switzerland, capital of Neuchâtel Canton, on the Lake of Neuchâtel, near Bern. The town, surrounded by dairy farms and vineyards, has industries producing wine and chocolate. In Neuchâtel are a castle, begun in the 12th century, the Collegiate Church (13th century), and the University of Neuchâtel (1909). Part of Burgundy in the 11th century, Neuchâtel passed to the house of Orléans-Longueville in 1504 and to Prussia in 1707. It joined the Swiss Confederation in 1815.
