Sundsvall, town in eastern Sweden, on an arm of the Gulf of Bothnia, near the mouth of the Ljungan River, in Västernorrland County. Sundsvall is a seaport and an industrial center. Major manufactures include cellulose, aluminum, and metal products. The settlement, chartered in 1621, grew during the late 19th century as the hub of a large lumber industry.
