Örebro, city in southern Sweden, a canal port near Lake Hjälmaren, capital of Örebro County. The city's major industry is the manufacture of shoes. Minerals obtained from the neighboring zinc, copper, and iron mines are conveyed to Göteborg and Stockholm by means of the extensive system of canals that connect the lakes of the interior with the maritime ports. The University of Örebro (1967) is here. Örebro is one of the oldest settlements in Sweden. Though largely rebuilt after a fire devastated it in 1854, the city still contains a number of medieval structures. At the Diet of Örebro, held in 1529, Lutheranism was established as the state religion of Sweden. Population (1998 estimate) 122,641.
