Linköping, city in southeastern Sweden, on the Stång River, near Göta Canal, Lake Vättern, and Lake Roxen. Linköping is the capital of Östergötland County and a major rail and industrial center; local manufactures include motor vehicles, railroad and aircraft equipment, and electrical appliances. Prominent since the Middle Ages, the city contains notable buildings such as a 12th-century cathedral and a 13th-century castle. Linköping University (1970) is here.
