La Rioja, Calahorra - - Pictures

Calahorra, town in the province of Logroño, in the former kingdom of Castile, in northern Spain. The town is located on a slope overlooking the Cidacos River, 4 km (3 mi) from its junction with the Ebro River. Calahorra lies on a railroad that connects Zaragoza in northeastern Spain with Bilbao, a seaport in northern Spain. Calahorra serves as a market center for a fertile district in the upper Ebro Valley, where a number of agricultural products are grown, including various vegetables and grains. Wine is also produced in the area, and cattle are raised there. In 76 BC the Iberians, the ancient people of southern and eastern Spain, held the Calahorra area against Pompey the Great, a powerful Roman general. But the Romans conquered the city four years later after a heroic resistance marked by prolonged famine. In the 1st century AD, Quintilian, who became a well-known Roman rhetorician, was born in Calahorra, then called Calagurris. The town fell to the Arabs in the first half of the 8th century, but was retaken by Don Garcia, the king of Navarre, in 1054.
