Santiago de Compostela, city in northwestern Spain, capital of the autonomous region of Galicia in La Coruña Province. Principal manufactures in the city include linen, soap, processed food, and religious articles. Santiago de Compostela has been a major place of pilgrimage in the Roman Catholic church since the 9th century, when the discovery was made nearby of the alleged bones of the apostle Saint James the Great (“Santiago” is Spanish for Saint James). Chief among the numerous medieval buildings in the city is the fine Romanesque cathedral, consecrated in 1128, which now contains the tomb of Saint James.
