Ibiza, capital of the island of Ibiza, located in the western Mediterranean Sea 100 km (60 mi) from the eastern coast of Spain.
Ibiza is located on Ibiza Bay at the southeast corner of the island. It has a small harbor and is the island's chief port. A modern town lies near the port. An older town is enclosed within a wall that was built during the 15th and 16th centuries. During its long history, the city has experienced Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine, Moorish, Aragonese, and Spanish rule. Population (1998 estimate) 29,447-31,582.
