Maribor (German Marburg), city in northern Slovenia, located on the Drava (Drau) River, near the Austrian border. It is one of the nation's principal industrial centers; manufactures include motor vehicles, aircraft, machinery, chemicals, and textiles. Tourism also is important. Landmarks include a 12th-century cathedral and a 15th-century castle. The University of Maribor (founded in 1975) is here. The city was called Marburg prior to its transfer from Austria to the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) in 1919, and became part of the independent country of Slovenia when the republic broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991.
