Severodvinsk, city in northwestern Russia, in Arkhangel'sk Oblast. Adjacent to Arkhangel'sk, the regional capital, Severodvinsk is located on the shore of the White Sea. Manufactures include timber, the production of road construction machinery, furniture, and construction materials. Severodvinsk lies outside of the unified electric power system and relies on two thermal power stations located in the city. Given its far northern location, transportation linkages are few, although it is the final point on a rail spur from the Obozerskaya-Arkhangel'sk line. Severodvinsk has a theater and a technical training school. The settlement was called Sydostroy until 1938, when it was designated a city. From 1938 to 1957 it was called Molotovsk in honor of the Soviet revolutionary Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov. Population (1995) 313,140.
