Rybinsk, city, central European Russia. Located at the confluence of the Volga and Sheksna rivers, it is a major transportation and industrial center; manufactures include ships, printing machinery, and wood products. Rybinsk Reservoir, adjacent to the city, was created in the 1940s by damming the Volga and Sheksna rivers and supports a hydroelectric facility. The site of Rybinsk was settled by the 12th century. From 1946 to 1957 the city was called Shcherbakov, and from 1984 to 1991 it bore the name Andropov. Population (1995) 273,019.
