Nizhniy Tagil, city, western Siberia Russia, on the Tagil River. Located in the eastern foothills of the Ural Mountains, the city is an important metallurgical center. Other manufactures include railroad equipment, heavy machinery, and chemicals. Founded in 1725 as a mining community, Nizhniy Tagil grew rapidly during World War II.
