Kemerovo, city, capital of Kemerovo Oblast, southern Siberian Russia, on the Tom' River. Served by a branch of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Kemerovo is one of the principal mining centers of the Kuznetsk Basin. Manufactures include chemicals, textiles, machinery, and forest products. The city, founded in the 1830s, was known as Shcheglovsk from 1925 to 1932. Population (1999 estimate) 494,400.
