Kamensk-Ural'skiy, city in southwestern Siberian Russia, in Yekaterinburg Oblast, about 100 km (about 60 mi) southeast of the oblast capital, Yekaterinburg. Kamensk-Ural'skiy is situated in the eastern foothills of the Ural Mountains at the confluence of the Kamenka and Iset rivers. It is part of the Urals Economic Region, which has long been a source of key minerals. Industries in Kamensk-Ural'skiy are focused on the extraction and preparation of metals, or metallurgy. The city underwent rapid industrialization when it was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), and factories were built for the production of aluminum and steel. An electricity-generating plant is located in Kamensk-Ural'skiy. The city is the railroad junction for the line serving Yekaterinburg, Kurgan, and Chelyabinsk. The city has several cultural establishments, including a museum of regional history and a theater. Kamensk-Ural'skiy also has a technical training school in aluminum production and medicine, as well as a department of the Urals Technical Training Institute. Kamensk-Ural'skiy was originally settled at the turn of the 17th century as the site of a cast-iron foundry. The settlement attained city status in 1935. Its name was Kamensk until 1940.
