Izhevsk, city in eastern European Russia. Izhevsk is the administrative center of Udmurtia, an autonomous republic in the Russian Federation. Izhevsk is located on the Izh River in an industrial region west of the Ural Mountains and is an important steel mill center. Other manufactured goods include forest products, machinery, and armaments. Izhevsk is the site of Udmurt State University, founded in 1972, and several other educational institutions. The city was founded in 1760. From 1985 to 1991 it was named Ustinov for Dmitri F. Ustinov, who was minister of defense for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1976 to 1984.
