Dzerzhinsk, city, central European Russia, on the Oka River. Various chemicals are produced here; deposits of phosphates, gypsum, limestone, and peat are in the vicinity. The modern city was formed (1930) when the village of Rastyapino was joined with two suburbs. The city grew rapidly before World War II.
