Bryansk, city, western Russia. Also called Briansk, the city is a railroad and industrial center on the Desna River. Manufactures include processed food, lumber, machinery, and glass and iron products. First mentioned in 1146, Bryansk was the seat of an independent principality until the late 1300s. It later was controlled by Lithuania and passed to Russia in the 16th century. During World War II the city was held (1941-43) by German forces. In 1943-91, the city was part of the USSR.
