Satu Mare, city in northwestern Romania, capital of Satu Mare County. The city lies on the Somes River in the Crisana-Maramures region and serves as a market center for local agricultural products, primarily fruit, vegetables, and wine. Its industrial products include machinery, textiles, timber, and building materials. The city is well connected by road and rail to the county's larger cities, to Hungary, and Ukraine. Points of interest include a regional history museum. Satu Mare was founded as a riverside settlement by workers who shipped mined salt deposits down the Somes. Historical documents from the early 13th century make first mention of the settlement. The Treaty of Szatmár, negotiated in 1711, brought an end to a popular uprising against Austrian rule led by Ferenc II Rákóczy.
