Cafe Ole str. George Calinescu 11A - 01 3101722 Cuisine: Italian Review:Irish Group on Wednesday 4/9/02 We had a very good relaxing meal in Cafe Ole. Approx 20 in the group were served by "George". He has a great way of treating people, and he was so very helpful with menu and wine, that his advise made all the meal very enjoyable. What ever he is paid it is not half enough.

But mostly you'll find businessmen and tourists here. The former caravanserai in the heart of the old city has lovely outdoor seating. Food is okay, service sorta just there. Nice selection of beers and wines, and a very pleasant place to hang out if you just enjoy it and don't think too much about the food or the service. One of those places you've got to say you've been to :-).
Sydney Bar & Grill 224, Calea Victoriei - 01 3129670 moderate A big, western-style bar/restaurant in the heart of downtown Bucharest. Menu and staff bilingual. Open 24 hours a day. Cuisine: Romanian Review:Ex-pat hangout in the heart of Bucharest Sydney Bar & Grill is the hot spot, sure enough! It's located on Piata Victoriei, a short walk from the embassies and mansions on Sos. Kisseleff (including the residence of the US ambassador), Muzeul Taranului (Peasant Museum), Muzeul Satului (Village Museum), and Parcul Herastrau. Everyone's got a cell phone and smoking imported cigarettes. By 9pm it's standing room only, and there are dozens of expensive cars and SUVs parked on the curb (that's right -- in Romania they park on the sidewalks). Definitely the place to be seen if you've got the $$$ (this place is priced *way* out of reach of most locals). The wait staff speak reasonably good English and are mostly well-intentioned. If you want good food and drinks, however, you might want to go elsewhere. Let's just say that the quality of both have gone downhill since our prior visits, when we really enjoyed this place. The menu (changed since last year, and no longer offering very much for vegetarians) is more hype than substance. The drinks menu is fun to read, but the small glass arrives with half a drink and the rest whipped cream. So go, sit on the patio, have fun, and people-watch (or be watched :), but don't expect to get more from the food and drink than to be overcharged for it.

Cuisine: Romanian Recommended Dishes: Anything but the $40 caviar, carne de mich is good Review:An old favourite Caru cu Bere (The Beer Cart) has survived wars, communism, and hordes of tourists. A pretty place in the heart of Bucharest's old section, around the corner from the National History Museum. Food is good enough, service so-so, and the no-smoking policy is rarely enforced. Businessmen and tourists like the Gypsy and folkloric shows here. Watch out for overcharging. Locals enjoy this place too, and it can get pretty crowded at night. Worth going to at least once, to say you've been there and to enjoy the intricate wood-carved interior. Review:What a Rip-Off
