Setúbal, formerly called in English Saint Ubes and in French Saint Yves, city, western Portugal, capital of Setúbal District, on Setúbal Bay near Lisbon. Setúbal is an important seaport and a major sardine-canning center. Wine, fruit, and cork are exported. The Church of Santa Maria, built in the 16th century, is well known for its highly ornate interior. Many of the older buildings of Setúbal, which was a royal residence in the 15th century, were destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1755.
