Portugal, Evora - - Pictures

Évora (ancient Ebora or Liberalitas Julia), city, southern Portugal, capital of Évora District, near Lisbon. Évora is the center of an agricultural and mining area, the chief products of which are cork, marble, asbestos, and copper and iron; mules are also raised extensively. Among the buildings in the city are the former palace of the archbishops, now the regional museum; the cathedral, dating from 1186, of Romanesque design until reconstructed in Gothic style in the 15th century; and an early 16th-century church of Moorish and Gothic design. The city also has architectural remains from Roman times. Évora became a Roman military outpost in 80 BC and a bishopric in the 5th century AD. It was taken by the Moors about 712 and ultimately recovered by the Christians in 1166. Population (1981) 34,851.
