Walbrzych (German Waldenburg), city in southwestern Poland, capital of Walbrzych Province, in the Sudety mountains of Lower Silesia. Located in a coal-mining region, it is a transportation center and has industries manufacturing chemicals, metals, and textiles. Walbrzych was founded in the 14th century and began its main growth in the 19th century. It was badly damaged in World War II (1939-1945) and passed from Germany to Poland after the war.
