Kielce, city in southeastern Poland, capital of Kielce Province, in the Holy Cross Mountains. The city is a rail junction and a processing and market center for the agricultural and mineral resources of the surrounding area. Local minerals include iron, marble, and limestone. Iron goods and processed foodstuffs are produced. Founded in 1173, the city has a medieval cathedral and a castle dating from 1638. A regional museum has displays on provincial life and resources.
