Chorzów, city in southern Poland, in Katowice Province, near Katowice. It is near a district noted for the production of coal, iron, and lumber in the Upper Silesia region. Industrial establishments in Chorzów include the large Kosciusko Iron and Steel Works, zinc works, rolling mills, and factories for the production of glass and bricks. The city was originally a German village, called Königshütte (Polish Królewska Huta), founded in 1797; it became a town in the 1860s. After World War I (1914-1918) Upper Silesia was divided between Germany and Poland, and Chorzów became a Polish city. Population (1997 estimate) 123,600.
