Lillehammer, town in southeastern Norway. Lillehammer is a picturesque town in the Lagen River valley, close to Lake Mjøsa and the mountainous Oppland region. It is the commercial and administrative center of Oppland and a popular tourist resort year round. Lillehammer has excellent access to skiing and outdoor sports at the nearby lakes and mountains. There is some industry associated with the processing of timber from local forests. Apart from the wide range of sports facilities, Lillehammer is home to the Maihaugen Open Air Museum, a re-siting of more than 130 historical buildings, with exhibits of local history and culture. There is also an art gallery, the Malerisamling. The author Brørnstjerne Bjørnson, winner of the 1903 Nobel Prize for literature, lived nearby. In 1994 Lillehammer, 137 km (85 mi) north of Oslo, hosted the Winter Olympics. The town won widespread praise for its organization of the games, as most events were within walking distance of the town center and the Olympic village.
