Hammerfest, town in northern Norway, on the island of Kvaløy, in Finnmark County. It is the northernmost town of Europe. In this area the sun remains above the horizon all day and all night from mid-May to July 29 and is not seen from November 18 to January 23. Hammerfest is the meeting place of the fishing and whaling fleets that operate in the Kara Sea and in the waters along the coasts of the Svalbard Archipelago.
