Zaanstad, also Zaandam, city in the western Netherlands, on the Zaan River, near its junction with the North Sea Canal. It is a rail center located in an industrial region. Manufactures include lumber products, chemicals, and dyes and paint. Zaanstad was an important shipbuilding center in the 17th century.
