Vlissingen, city on the North Sea, in the Walcheren region of Zeeland Province, in The Netherlands. Vlissingen is situated on the estuary of the Schelde River, 137 km (85 mi) southwest of Amsterdam and 64 km (40 mi) northwest of Antwerp. During World War II (1939-1945) Vlissingen was badly damaged and the adjacent land flooded because of the destruction of the surrounding dikes. Population (2000) 44,218.
