Schiedam, city in the western Netherlands, in Zuid-Holland (South Holland) Province, on the Lower Rhine River, near Rotterdam. Schiedam is noted for the distillation of gin that is exported throughout the world. The city also has shipyards and factories that manufacture chemicals and glass. Schiedam was chartered in 1273.
