Leeuwarden, city in the northern Netherlands, capital of Friesland Province, on the Van Harinxma and Prinses Margriet canals. The city is a large fruit and cattle market and has plants manufacturing clothing, artificial silk, linen fabrics, footwear, soap, machinery, and food products. Leeuwarden was chartered in 1435. Population (2000) 88,855.
