IJmuiden, city in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Velsen. IJmuiden lies near the mouth of the North Sea Canal, which connects the capital city Amsterdam, 24 km (15 mi) to the east, with the North Sea. The locks of the canal are among the largest in the world.
Fishing is IJmuiden's primary industry. The city also has an iron and steel plant. Population (2000) 14,817.
