De Vroome Poort
Nieuw Heiligland 10 - 023-5317285 moderate
French restaurant in a monumental building in the center of Haarlem, with murals giving it a medieval impression. The restaurant is situated directly behind the Frans Hals-museum, making it an excellent location to discuss a visit over a nice meal or wine selected from the wide variety of wines.\n\nLunch reservations required, 10 person minimum. A three course meal costs about 30 Euro.\n\nThe website is in Dutch.\n\nPublic transit is reasonably nearby and various parking garages are at walking distance.
Cuisine: Dutch / Belgian
Review: Ever so slightly over-designed, and a tad self-conscious about it, De Vroome Poort is nevertheless worth a mention, and forgiveness. The dishes may come from the same ‘designery' background, but somehow they work better than the décor. The prawn and shrimp starter with a curried, creamy sauce is delicious. Desserts score high too – the vanilla ice cream with waffles is better tasted than described.
Nagoya
Spaarne 48 - 023-5327222 moderate
Japanese restaurant next to the river Spaarne, featuring a wide range of Japanese dishes, sorted by geographical origin, some of which are prepared at the table. Dietary and vegetarian meals are also possible.\n
The website is in Dutch. A three course meal costs about 20 Euro.\n
Paid street parking is possible ('Spaarne', 'Gedempte oude gracht') but the restaurant is accessible through public transit as well.
Cuisine: Japanese
Review: Japanese food is great for pickers, isn’t it? If you fall into the ‘picker’ category, you should enjoy the Nagoya. The sashimi selection is good, but this is, so to speak, just for starters. The rest of the menu is divided into categories by city – so you could go for a selection from the Tokyo section, or something from Osaka maybe. It doesn’t really help us foreigners much, and the choice is endless, so the best advice is just choose a city you like the sound of geographically and have a bit of everything. You’ll probably love all of it.
