Amersfoort, city in the central Netherlands, in Utrecht Province, on the Eem River, near Utrecht. Amersfoort is a market town for the surrounding agricultural region and is an important railway junction and industrial center. The principal manufactures include chemicals, tobacco products, silk and woolen goods, and foodstuffs.
Amersfoort was chartered in 1259. The old central part of the town, which still stands, was built with a surrounding wall into which houses and water gates were set. It is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, with several fine churches and a notable 95-m (312-ft) bell tower. Population (2000) 126,270.
